Some Simple notes on Windows 2000

To install Windows 2000 you have several options one is to Upgrade on previous version of Windows or clean install this clean install also for dual boot of Operating Systems.

Before installing windows 2000 you have again 3 versions

1. Windows 2000 Server
2. Windows 2000 Professional
3. Advanced Windows 2000 server
etc.,

Place the Windows 2000 CD in CD-Rom and restart Windows and set the boot option in bios to cdrom, hdd, floppy after setting this it asks for boot from cd and the process starts for clean install. For upgrading of Windows 2000 you have to start setup from windows only.

For Clean Install booting from CD this is loading every driver required for the installation into the system and starts the setup after some easy steps it asks for the CD-key you may also skip this one as mentioned in withoutcdkey document. So enter the CDKey and continue this will install the Windows 2000. Every new person has to read this patiently this may help you in installing correctly.

This Windows 2000 OS is Multi User, Multi Tasking, Multi Threading

Configuring Windows 2000 Server

Active Directory Service (Domain Control Promotion)

Domain - Universal name of the Company. (ex: rediff, yahoo)

For Domain Control Promotion the steps are followed as shown below

start> run> "dcpromo"   (Without Quotations)

This is possible only on NTFS  not FAT32

For this convert the FAT32 to NTFS the command as followes

prompt:/>convert d:/fs:NTFS    Enter      (convert "d" drive and File system is NTFS)

Active Directory Service some steps

. Domain Controller for a new domain
. additional domain controller for an existing domain
. create a new domain tree
. create a new child
. create new forest
. place this new domain in the forest
 

To make one system  as client follow these steps

>Donot install ADS

>Open Mycomputer > Properties > Network Identification> properties > Domain > Server DNS> Ok then  restart the computer

For Network IP-Address of Client

>Local Area Connections Properties > Internet Protocol > Properties >  For example use the following IP Address

IP Address  : 140.140.140.10
Subnet Mask : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: -
> Use the following DNS Server Addresses

Preferred DNS Server 140.140.140.12
Alternate DNS Server -

> OK


To Send the Message From one to another is

>net send "Name" "message" (Without Quotations)
